BREAST RECONSTRUCTION
Studies and our own experiences show that breast reconstruction surgeries provide great psychological support to women.
We can perform breast reconstruction surgeries simultaneously with breast removal (mastectomy) surgery. In this way, our patients have a new breast when they come out of surgery and do not have to experience the psychological distress that a breastless period can cause. Thanks to new technologies in medicine, the breast created in reconstruction surgeries can be very similar to the natural breast.

The replacement of a breast removed for cancer or similar reasons is called "breast reconstruction". Today, it ranks first among the surgeries that are important in terms of making the patient happy. Dec. Thanks to the developing new techniques and technologies, it is now possible to perform reconstructions very similar to the other breast. In most patients, reconstruction can be performed immediately after breast removal (mastectomy). Performing two surgeries in the same session both ensures that the patient is missing an operation, and also psychologically supports the patient, since the place of the breast tissue taken will not remain empty. In these patients, depression called “postmastectomy depression”, which develops after breast removal, is also less common.
Breast surgery performed after a mastectomy is not a simple procedure. There are various options, the plastic surgeon and the patient decide together which method to apply.
Who Is This Surgery Suitable For ?
In the vast majority of patients who have undergone mastectomy, there are no medical barriers to this operation, and in many of them it can be performed in the same session as a mastectomy.
In some cases, there may be justified reasons to delay reconstruction. Some women may not want reconstruction to be added to the mental and physical burden brought by cancer surgery. It may be necessary to wait for those who are extremely fat, have high blood pressure, or smoke. Even if it is to be expected, talking about reconstruction options before mastectomy will put the patient who will undergo surgery in a better state morally.
Breast reconstruction has no known effect on the recurrence of cancer. In addition, it also does not affect chemotherapy (drug therapy) or radiotherapy (radiation therapy), which can be performed after a mastectomy.
Delaying the reconstruction will bring more psychological burden. In patients who do not have reconstruction immediately after mastectomy, getting used to the feeling of October deficiency caused by the loss of breast tissue and then getting used to the new breast after reconstruction causes additional mental trauma.
Operation
As soon as breast cancer is diagnosed, reconstruction alternatives should be evaluated. The ideal thing is for the general surgeon who will perform the mastectomy and the plastic surgeon who will perform the reconstruction to discuss together and determine the best option for you.
It has an effect on the general health status of the patient, anatomical structure, tissue characteristics and the selection of the method to be determined for the purposes.
Since breast reconstruction is not an aesthetic surgery, many health insurances cover all or at least some of the expenses.
Breast reconstruction surgery can sometimes be performed in two sessions instead of one session.
Tissue Expansion and Reconstructions Performed Using Breast Prosthesis
It is the most commonly used breast reconstruction option. This surgery is performed using implants (breast prosthesis). Prostheses are substances filled with silicone gel on the inside and with a silicone case on the outside. In addition to the methods of applying a tissue expander in the first session and placing a silicone prosthesis in the second session, the procedure can now be completed in a single session thanks to breast implants that can both expand the tissue and replace the prosthesis today. Tissue expansion may take 2-3 months after surgery, and at the end of this period, the newly made breast reaches its actual size. This is the time it takes for the tissue to expand. It is possible to make the nipple and the dark colored part around it (nipple-areola) in another session, which can also be performed with local anesthesia. In some patients, the breast skin may remain in sufficient quantity after mastectomy, in which case there is no need to expand the tissue, with simpler prostheses, the procedure is completed in a shorter time.
Reconstructions Made with Tissue Transfers
It is also possible to perform reconstruction by transferring tissues prepared from areas such as the abdomen or back to the breast area.
Tissue transfer can be done in two ways. In a species, the tissue to be transferred is transferred from one end depending on the main place of nutrition. In the other, the tissue containing skin, fat and muscle is transferred freely and the vessels are repaired again where they were transferred. For this second method, the plastic surgeon must master microsurgery in addition to the experience required for breast October reconstruction.
Breast prosthesis is not used for repairs made by tissue transfer, the newly made breast fullness is provided by the patient's own tissues.
Depending on the type and duration of the surgery, the patient should stay in the hospital for two to five days. Stitches are usually removed within two weeks following surgery. It may take up to a month to return to normal activities. This period is shorter in reconstructions performed only with prosthesis.
After Surgery
The newly made breast tissue may not have exactly the same shapes and characteristics compared to the other one. The goal is to achieve as similar a result as possible. But these minimal changes will be perceived only by you, not by those around you.
Breast reconstruction surgery is an operation that makes significant changes in both the appearance of patients and their outlook on life. In a study conducted in patients who had undergone breast reconstruction in the United States, 98% of patients stated that they would want to have breast reconstruction again if they encountered the same problem again.
Surgeries to be Performed on the Other Breast
Along with breast reconstruction, the opposite breast can also be intervened in the same session to better ensure symmetry. The other breast can be reduced, enlarged or straightened to ensure harmony with the newly made breast. Although some high-risk patients who have had breast cancer surgery do not have cancer, breast prosthesis can be applied by emptying the breast tissues in the opposite breast. Thus, in the advanced period, the risk of developing cancer in the other breast is eliminated.
